Scoring and Grading

A passing score on the Rhode Island bar exam is 276 out of 400 points. This is based on the weighted scores of the MBE (worth 50%), the essay questions (worth 41%), and the Multistate Performance Test (9%). However, an exam taker must score at least 130 on the MBE portion to pass.

Bar Exam Dates

The Rhode Island bar exam is administered twice per year – once in February and once in July.

Bar Exam Results

Rhode Island bar exam results are typically released 10 weeks after the exam.

Bar Exam Format

The Rhode Island bar exam is 2 days long and consists of the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), 3 Rhode Island local essay questions, 6 Multistate Essay questions, and 1 Multistate Performance Test (MPT).

During the 3-hour morning session, three 30 minute local essay questions and one 90 minute MPT are administered. During the 3-hour afternoon session, 6 Multistate Essay questions are administered.

100 MBE questions are administered in the 3-hour morning session, and 100 MBE questions are administered in the 3-hour afternoon session.


The Rhode Island Bar does not allow admission on motion.
