The Pennsylvania bar exam may test the following MBE and Pennsylvania Essay subjects:

Scoring and Grading

A passing score on the Pennsylvania bar exam is 272 points. This is based on the weighted score of the MBE (worth 45%) and the combined scores of the the Pennsylvania essay questions and Performance Test (55%). The Performance Test is worth 1.5 times as much as a single essay question.

Bar Exam Dates

The Pennsylvania bar exam is administered twice per year – once in February and once in July.

Bar Exam Results

Pennsylvania bar exam results are typically released in mid April for the February exam and mid October for the July exam.

Bar Exam Format

The Pennsylvania bar exam is 2 days long and consists of the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), 6 Pennsylvania essay questions, and one Performance Test (developed by PA Board).

During the 3-hour morning session, 2 Pennsylvania essay questions and one Performance Test are administered. During the 3-hour afternoon session, 4 more Pennsylvania essay questions are administered.

100 MBE questions are administered in the 3-hour morning session, and 100 MBE questions are administered in the 3-hour afternoon session.

During the 3-hour morning session, 6 more Pennsylvania essay questions are administered.


The Pennsylvania Bar allows admission on motion for domestic attorneys if applicant meets all requirements for admission, including: (1) are active member of bar of a reciprocal state; (2) have a law degree from ABA approved law school; (3) practicing law at least half time for 5 of last 7 years in reciprocal state or passed bar exam in reciprocal state.
