Scoring and Grading

A passing score on the Illinois bar exam is 268 on a 400-point scale. This is based on the combined weighted scores of the MBE, the Essay Questions, and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT). The MBE is weighted 50%, the essays are weighted 40%, and the MPT is weighted 10%.

Bar Exam Dates

The Illinois bar exam is administered twice per year – once in February and once in July.

Bar Exam Results

Illinois bar exam results are typically released during the first half of April for the February exam, and during the first half of October for the July exam.

Bar Exam Format

The Illinois bar exam includes the written portion on day one, and the MBE on day two.

Tuesday
During the 3-hour morning session, one MPT and 3 Illinois Essay Exam questions (drafted by Illinois examiners) are administered. During the three-hour afternoon session, 6 Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) questions are administered.

Wednesday
100 MBE questions are administered in the 3-hour morning session, and 100 MBE questions are administered in the 3-hour afternoon session.

Reciprocity

The Illinois Bar allows for admission on motion by a practicing attorney in another jurisdiction. The attorney must meet several conditions, including practicing law for 5 of the last 7 years.
